Service Description: 179-bed facility serving the City of St Thomas and all seven municipalities within the County of Elgin

Services include:
  • outpatient care (surgery and ambulatory clinics)
  • diagnostic imaging
  • inpatient acute care (medicine, surgery, maternal child)
  • emergency services
  • post-acute care (rehabilitation and continuing care)
  • regional satellite services (chemotherapy and stroke unit)


Acute Medical Unit - Nursing care for patients with gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory problems (pneumonia, chronic bronchitis) and cardiovascular disease (stroke, chest pain and heart failure)

Continuing Care Centre (CCC) - Offers 3 levels of care including activation, restoration and progression * exercise and recreational activities increase and strengthen independence * average length of stay is 56 to 72 days

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) - 14-bed closed unit to care for patients over the age of 18 who are critically ill or injured and whose condition requires continuous monitoring and support * classified as Level 3 to provide service to patients who require advanced or prolonged respiratory support

Mental Health Care - 15-bed unit for inpatients requiring hospitalization up to two weeks, and space for related outpatient programs and services

St Thomas District Stroke Centre - Integrated Stroke Unit - One of four District Stroke Centres in the South West region * 8-bed Integrated Stroke Unit (ISU) provides acute and rehabilitative care, service and support to patients living in St Thomas and Elgin County who have experienced a stroke

Women and Children's Program - Pediatrics, Having a baby at STEGH, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - Pre-natal, intrapartum, post-partum, neonatal, and pediatric care
