Research Updates on Cancer and Juvenile Diabetes

The following stories this week from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and Robarts Research Institute at The University of Western Ontario may be of interest:

Cancer-Free Future
This week’s Café Scientifique topic is “From Mice to Men: Towards a Cancer-Free Future.” This is a free public discussion featuring Dr. Glenn Bauman, the Chair of the Department of Oncology at Western’s Schulich School Medicine and Dentistry and Dr. Lisa Porter, Assumption Chair in Cancer Research at the University of Windsor.

Audiences at UWindsor and Western will be linked with videoconferencing in special lecture theatres, equipped with remote cameras, a microphone system at each chair, and huge video screens. Café Scientifique is sponsored by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to encourage members of the public to explore, discuss and debate the latest topics in medical science with experts.

Café Scientifique takes place Wednesday, November 12 from 7 to 8:30 pm. in Medical Sciences Building Room M146 at Western and in Room 1115 in the new Medical Education Building at UWindsor. No pre-registration is required and seating is on a first-come, first served basis.

Advances in Juvenile Diabetes
There has been significant advancement in the field of Juvenile Diabetes. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) funded research in the past 6 years. Learn more about this research on Wednesday, November 12, from 6:30 to 9pm. at the Robarts Research Institute at Western in the Fischer Scientific Conference Room.

Speakers include:
Dr. Terry Delovitch Chief Advisor Research, JDRF Canada, Professor of Immunology and Robarts Scientist.
Topic: JDRF Update on Type 1 Diabetes: Challenges, Successes, & Progress towards a Cure.
Dr. David Hess, Robarts Scientist, Vascular Biology Research Group for Stem Cell Biology and Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology & Pharmacology.
Topic: Transplantation of human stem cells for the regeneration of beta cell function.

Future scientists?
Grade 12 chemistry and biology students from H.B. Beale Secondary School will be visiting the Robarts Research Institute on Thursday, November 13 from 9:15am to 11:30 am. The 35 students will participate in research demonstrations and have the opportunity to quiz scientists about their career paths.
