United Way Perth-Huron Awards Grants to Students of Central Huron Secondary School and Listowel District Secondary School to Raise Awareness of Mental Health Issues

United Way Perth-Huron's Program Review and Allocations Committee, has awarded Central Huron Secondary School and Listowel District Secondary School Students a 2014-2015 Youth Grant.

The purpose of the youth grant is to assist young leaders in addressing issues that are important to them and their community. Projects must have a lead youth applicant (age 14-25) and an adult trustee to assist in the stewardship of funds.

The schools collaborated to focus on an issue that was relevant in both communities. They both felt that mental health was an important issue in their schools and wanted to make a difference. They have created an event to help fellow students who may be suffering from mental health issues. The student's council will be hosting an assembly with guest speaker Kevin Breel, a 20 year old writer, comedian, and mental health activist, to talk to the students about mental health issues and the associated stigmas.

"We chose this project because depression and mental health is a serious issue and impacts the lives of students at CHSS", said Nick McGregor, Central Huron student's council vice president. Recently, a former CHSS student took his own life which is a contributing factor to why the students wanted to host the mental health awareness assembly. "We want them to know there are pillars in their community they can depend on", said Rachel Suffern of Listowel District.

Both schools hope that they can make the school and community more open and accepting of people who are suffering, and allow the students suffering to feel they are not alone.

Both assemblies took place Friday February 21st, 2014.
