More Families Able to Receive Free Dental Care through Healthy Smiles Ontario

More Perth County children may now be able to receive free dental care through the Healthy Smiles Ontario Program. As of April 1, 2014, the provincial program has increased the income cut-off to qualify for the program, meaning that more families will be eligible under the new income requirements.

“This is great news for Perth County,” says Andrea Harbin, Dental Assistant/Educator with the Perth District Health Unit. “We are thrilled to be able to help more children receive dental care because of this increase.”

Healthy Smiles Ontario, which is offered through the Perth District Health Unit, is for children 17 years and younger who do not have access to any dental coverage and who meet the program’s eligibility requirements. Eligible children will receive regular dental care, including preventive and early treatment, for free.

“Proper dental care is essential to a person’s health and prevention is always less costly than treatment,” adds Harbin. “Seeing a dental professional at least once per year is important for good oral health.”
