Seniors’ care takes spotlight Elder health – the whole spectrum of care

According to Statistics Canada’s population projections, for the first time in Canadian history the number of adults over age 65 could exceed the number of children by 2016.

To provide the best care for the growing number of seniors, on April 30 over 550 health care providers are gathering for 28th Geriatric Medicine Refresher Day where they’ll spend an intense day learning the most up-to-date medical information and techniques to care for our elders from national and international experts.

A geriatric neurologist, cognitive neuroscientist, and global bioethicist, and one of the best known Alzheimer’s experts in the world, keynote speaker Dr. Peter Whitehouse will speak on The Art of Dementia: Finding Beauty in a Broken World. Dr. Whitehouse is also speaking about The Intergenerational School in Cleveland that he founded. This school brings together youth and elders in a learning environment that supports academic excellence and life skills for young students, as well as lifelong learning for elders with physical or cognitive limitations.

Complementing Dr. Whitehouse’s presentations, 13 other health. care experts will present on a variety of topics including older drivers, elder abuse, alcohol problems in later life, sudden vision loss and elder meditation.

“We are thrilled with this year’s outstanding speakers who will share their knowledge about optimizing care for older adults,” says conference chair Dr. Laura Diachun.

Geriatric Medicine deals with the unique needs of the frail elderly. The conference is hosted by the division of geriatric medicine at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in collaboration with St. Joseph’s Health Care London’s specialized geriatric services.
