City of London
City Opens Fourth Seniors' Satellite Centre
Today members of the community, Mayor Fontana, Councillor White and City staff gathered to officially open the fourth seniors’ satellite centre at Chalmers Presbyterian Church with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a community celebration. Mayor Fontana is excited to see the centres catching on and providing activity space for residents. He says, “Keeping active and engaged at every stage of our life is so important. The demand for senior’s programming and facilities tells us we need to keep up with a very active crowd and that’s what the City is doing. We are listening to our residents and putting activities in place for them – where they can access them.” Chalmers Seniors’ Satellite, located at 342 Pond Mills Road, is the fourth of its kind in London. Through public input and requests from members, the first seniors’ satellite location opened at the East London Library in September of 2012. The second seniors’ satellite opened at the Boyle Community Centre in April 2013. The third location opened at the Berkshire club in November 2013. The Argyle, Boyle and Berkshire Seniors’ Satellites have a combined membership of 225, and each week these active older adults participate in a wide range of active and passive recreation and leisure activities. “The City has always recognized the importance of reaching out to older adults in London, and with the creation of our satellite locations we are offering new opportunities for people to participate in various recreation and leisure programs, meet new friends, and volunteer, all within their immediate neighbourhood,” said Lynne Livingstone, Managing Director of Neighbourhood, Children and Fire Services. “Each satellite, although in different London communities, will always be welcoming, accessible, diverse, inclusive, and age friendly. We are very appreciative of our partnership with Chalmers Presbyterian Church for use of their facilities for this new community seniors’ satellite site.” The annual membership fee to a Seniors’ Satellite Centre is $8.85 (plus tax). Programs and activities run Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon. Media Contact:
