National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day – Saturday, May 10

Clean out your medicine cabinet to help reduce the misuse or accidental use of prescription drugs. Saturday, May 10 is National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day, an event organized by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and supported by Police Services and other organizations across Canada. It’s a day for you to safely dispose of your unused or expired prescription drugs. Please, do not flush them down the toilet, throw in the trash or share with someone else.

Non-medical use of prescription drugs have been reported as a community concern for many years, with prescription pain relievers being the fourth most commonly used drug by Ontario students in 2011 (OSDUHS 2011).

“This campaign aims to reduce the amount of prescription drugs available to those who abuse them and to educate the public on the danger and harm associated with the misuse of prescription medication.” says Inspector Vince Wurfel of the Owen Sound Police Service. “Most people who use prescription drugs for non medical purposes often obtain the drugs from the homes of family members, friends or acquaintances. That is why it is so important to properly dispose of any unwanted and unused medication.”
