1 Million KM Summer: Oxford County residents encouraged to log their cycling kilometres, and aim for 1,000,000
Oxford County’s Cycling Advisory Committee is launching a challenge this summer for local residents to hop on their bikes and ride towards a common goal. The goal during Oxford County’s “1 million km summer” is to collectively ride 1,000,000 kilometres between May 17 and October 5, 2014.
During the “1 million km summer” residents can visit rideoxford.ca to quickly and easily submit their distance cycled, to be added to the community’s total. The site also gives residents the option to login using an email address to keep a running tally of their own total kilometres cycled over the course of the challenge.
Cyclists can also log-in using their Facebook or Twitter account if they want to share their activity with their friends and followers.
Also look for the “1 million km summer” to be incorporated into local events where the number of cyclists and total kilometres can be counted and entered into the website as a group effort.
Those events include:
- Ingersoll Family Bike Ride – May 25
- Woodstock Triathalon – May 25
- Great Canadian Bike Tours (Drumbo area) – Sept. 1
- Lakeside Triathlon – Sept. 13-14
- Tillsonburg Harvest Ride – Oct. 4-5
The Oxford County Cycling Advisory Committee hopes the “Million km summer” will encourage more citizens to ride their bikes this summer, and to ride safely as they share the road with motorists.
Quotes:
“The 1 million kilometre summer isn’t about who can ride the fastest or farthest, it’s about a community coming together, being active and celebrating cycling. It also gives us a chance to drive home our ‘share the road’ message, for motorists and cyclists to allow time and space for safe travel.”
— Lorna Boratto, Public Health Nurse, Oxford County Public Health & Emergency Services
“The most exciting aspect of trying to ride 1 million kilometers, is doing it together as a community. Having families, riding groups and community events being active together and logging their kilometres is a great way to have fun while building community spirit.”
— Scott McReynolds, Co-Chair, Oxford Cycling Advisory Committee
Background:
The Oxford Cycling Advisory Committee was established April 2013 to foster a bike-friendly community that encourages and facilitates people to use the bicycle for recreation as an alternate, environmentally friendly mode of transportation. The committee’s goals include: creating a safer cycling environment on the roads, developing cycling routes and trail networks, encouraging commuter cycling, and promoting cycle tourism within the county.
