GBHS Hospitals Get Top Marks for Patient Satisfaction

Grey Bruce Health Services hospitals have received some of the best patient satisfaction results among Ontario hospitals based on 2012/13 survey summaries recently released by the National Research Corporation of Canada (NRC).

NRC manages patient satisfaction surveys for hospitals across the province, and distributes annual results to hospitals to encourage facilities to share and learn from the best practices of other sites.

The survey focused on two main questions about the care in various hospital departments - “Overall, how would you rate the care you received at the hospital?” and “Would you recommend this hospital to your family or friends?” Hospitals were compared to similar sized facilities and were grouped by small, community and academic hospitals.

“We are extremely pleased with the survey results,” said Maureen Solecki, GBHS President and CEO. “We are grateful to our patients for the feedback, and we congratulate our staff for delivering such excellent care.”

NRC sent out approximately 5000 surveys to GBHS patients who had received care from many different areas, including oncology, the emergency department, day surgery, rehabilitation services, etc. The survey results show that GBHS hospitals in Lion’s Head, Owen Sound, Wiarton, Meaford and Markdale ranked at the top in several categories.

GBHS Lion’s Head Hospital was the top performing community hospital in two survey categories – in ‘Overall Satisfaction’ with acute (inpatient) care, and in response to the question ‘Would you Recommend’ the emergency department to others.

Other survey results:

For the “Would Recommend” category in acute care:
  • GBHS Lion’s Head & Wiarton Hospitals were rated within the top 3 performing hospitals in Ontario

For the “Overall Satisfaction” category in acute care:
  • Meaford and Wiarton are among Ontario community hospitals at the 90th percentile and above

For the “Would Recommend” category in Emergency Care:
  • GBHS Wiarton and Markdale were in the 90th percentile and above in community hospitals in Ontario

For the “Overall Satisfaction” category in Emergency Care:
  • GBHS Markdale and Meaford were in the 90th percentile and above

For the “Overall Satisfaction” category in Day Surgery:
  • GBHS Owen Sound was in the top three performers in Ontario

The NRC report indicated significant increases in patient satisfaction scores in many other areas of the GBHS hospitals.
