Youth Planting Community Vegetable Garden for Charity: Harvested produce will be donated to local food banks during the summer

On Tuesday, May 27, 2014, the What the Health? youth team will be planting their annual vegetable garden in the courtyard of the Oxford County Public Health building in Woodstock with the intent of donating the produce to families in need across Oxford County.

The garden, planted for the first time last year, will again be a meaningful experience for youth, fostering responsibility, hard work, and patience while giving them opportunity to give back to the community. Students will care for the garden over the summer and produce will be donated to local food banks as it is harvested.
As part of the program, recipients of the garden produce will also receive vegetable preparation tips and easy-to-make recipes using readily available resources.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 27, 2014 – 3:30 - 5 p.m. (rain date June 3, 2014)
WHERE: Oxford County Public Health, 410 Buller St. Woodstock, rear courtyard off Graham Street parking lot

Quick Facts:

  • Each vegetable donation will have a correlating recipe card, which will include easy vegetable prep techniques, cooking and/or raw eating instructions for the specific vegetable and one-two recipes that will use both the vegetable and common food bank donation items.
  • The goals for the garden are:
    • To create awareness for Oxford County youth on the benefits of a community garden;
    • To provide education to youth about field to table resources; and
    • To donate garden grown foods to community food banks.
  • The youth will continue to share progress and pictures on the What the Health? Facebook page.
  • The students tending the environmentally friendly garden use rain water barrels for watering and compost any organic waste on site.
  • Eating healthy on a budget can be difficult, but through education and planning it is possible. For information on planning and eating on a budget, Oxford County residents can look at the nutrition section on www.oxfordcounty.ca/Health
