Say No to Hunger - Support the 18th Annual London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive

The London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive begins its 18th year of collecting food donations for the London Food Bank this Friday, June 6. Londoners have been incredibly generous over the last seventeen years, donating 1,133,210 pounds of non-perishable donations to one of Canada’s most unique food drives.

Mayor Fontana is grateful to those who participate in the London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive.  He says, “This amazing community initiative clearly illustrates how Londoners help Londoners. It’s a simple concept that works. Take your canned goods and non-perishable items to the curb on your recycling day.  Make certain you mark the donation bag with a bright ribbon or sign and the volunteers do the rest. Thank you to the corporate and media sponsors who help make this food drive possible, to the businesses who send volunteers and to the City of London staff who, for the past 18 years, have shown leadership and unwavering commitment to an exceptional program.”

Over the past 5 years,  the need for food donations has grown almost 44%.  Every pound of food is more important than ever,” said Jane Roy, Co-Executive Director of the London Food Bank. “In 2013, we had more than 3,600 families per month on average visiting the Food Bank - that translates to more than 43,000 visits during the year.”

63,350 pounds of food donations were delivered to the London Food Bank in 2013 from curbside collection, corporate donations, Tim Hortons and grocery stores donations bins.

Participation in the London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive is easy. Londoners have 3 choices. Between June 6-14, Londoners can buy a few extra non-perishable food donations and leave them at their neighbourhood grocery store, bring items to at any Tim Hortons location, or they can place their donations in a bag tied with a ribbon and set-out beside their Blue Box in the morning of their recycling day. The City’s recycling contractor Miller Waste and volunteer crews will collect the donations from the curb.

All food collected by the Food Drive is donated to the London Food Bank. This is a necessary service for those who need a helping hand to get through difficult periods of their lives.
