St Joseph's Shares 2013/14 Performance Results: Transformation and infrastructure finish line in sight

Today, St. Joseph’s Health Care London reported its year-end results to the community and to its owners and sponsors—the St. Joseph’s Health Care Society.

“The ongoing shifts, constraints and demands of today’s provincial health care system call on us to focus on priorities and build capacity to ensure we can still respond to the needs of those we serve,” said president and CEO Dr. Gillian Kernaghan.

Performance accountability and innovation
“Innovation is about how we lead, how we focus on the patient’s experience, create responsive environments, invest in technology and forge partnerships,” said Dr. Kernaghan.

Among the past year’s innovations are the reduction in hospital stay time for prostatectomy from three days to 23 hours, and the veterans art classes offered to operational stress injury clients who have psychological injuries related to their military service.

Significant quality performance strides made in 2013/14 include decreasing the number of falls with injuries by 190 at Parkwood Hospital and Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care; helping reduce the spread of influenza by increasing staff and physician influenza vaccinations by 16 per cent; and reaching 85.5 per cent hand hygiene compliance for the moment before patient contact.

Lawson Health Research Institute-the research institute of St. Joseph's and London Health Sciences Centre-is ninth among Canada's top 40 research hospitals. Lawson highlights for the year include using smartphone apps combined with diet and exercise prescriptions to prevent and manage diabetes in rural and remote communities, creating the Breast Care Clinical Research and Tumour Biobank so scientists can access the specimens they need to test new ways to manage and prevent breast cancer, and continuing to improve Computed Tomography (CT) imaging software to quickly analyze and address the damage caused by stroke, cancer, and heart attack.

Results for this year’s employee workplace survey which covered areas such as communication, leadership, job, health, safety, and infection control practices, showed that despite over 15 years of major hospital restructuring and change, the overall employee engagement scores from the previous survey were maintained and physician ratings improved.

Hospital renewal
With fifteen years of acute care program transformation behind us, a key focus in 2013/14 was the continued transformation in specialized mental health care.

Marked by a pink crane for most of the year, construction continued at St. Joseph's Hospital, transforming the front of the 125-year-old site with full accessibility features and creating new research spaces including space for a research team supporting clinical research and chronic disease. This final project will be completed in January 2015.

The new specialized mental health care building, set to open this November on the same site as Parkwood Hospital, will mark the shift to a focus on care recovery and rehabilitation in the mental health care system. A vision of a new community is emerging as our mental health care programs join our complex care, rehabilitation and geriatric care programs in one geographic location.

Fiscal results
St. Joseph's audited financial statements were approved by the Society. In 2013/14 there was a GAAP surplus of $10.1 million - primarily due to investment income and one-time unplanned revenues. In addition, the year ended with a $2.5 million favourable variance from normal operations (0.6 per cent of the total hospital budget of $432 million). These favourable variances were used to offset $2.5 million of unfunded restructuring costs.

“This is a remarkable achievement, considering this result was achieved during another year of transformational change amid the continuation of hospital funding reform,” said board treasurer David VanTrigt, who added funding reform of this magnitude holds challenges for all hospitals, including St. Joseph’s.

“St. Joseph’s is one of only four teaching hospitals impacted by all five modules of the province’s Health Based Allocation Model,” said board chair Margaret McLaughlin. “This speaks to the complexity of our enterprise and the scope of our roles in the hospital system. To span these areas and long term care is challenging, yet the St. Joseph’s team rises to this call, while continuing to complete the significant hospital renewal projects.”

“We have met the challenges of supporting the organization through complex transitions within shrinking resources,” said David. “With our hospital facility and infrastructure transformation finish line in sight, St. Joseph’s remains well positioned to take on a future where care, teaching and research programs are prepared to meet the most prevalent health care needs.”
