City Takes Summer Water Safety Message into Schools

With the warm summer days comes more Londoners enjoying backyard and public pools.  Before the water temperature rises, the City of London’s Aquatics Safety Promotion Teams are visiting area schools to perform skits for the students to promote the importance of water safety. Today, the water safety team presented for the students of Byron Southwood Public School.

“We find when the message is in a format that the children can relate to, they are better engaged and remember the safety message. In past years, we have seen examples of students using the skills they learned from the presentations when incidents arise in the community,” said Lynn Loubert, Manager of Aquatic Services for the City of London.

The aquatics safety team promotes sun smart awareness, pool rules, drowning prevention and what to do in emergency situations to students by performing creative and interactive skits that the children will remember.

Since 1992, the Aquatics Safety Promotion teams have gone in to local schools every year to demonstrate to students how to have fun in the summer time while staying safe. In 2013, the teams visited 40 schools, sharing the water safety messages with approximately 7,608 students.
