South Bruce takes top honours on Longest Day of PLAY

Grey Bruce residents got active for the first day of summer taking part in the annual Longest Day of PLAY held on June 21. The Longest Day of PLAY is a community-based challenge to encourage residents to get more active. Awards are given to the municipalities logging the most PLAY hours, based on population.

Below are the top participating municipalities, based on hours per 1000 population:

Municipality                             Hours Per 1000 Population          Total Hours of PLAY
1.    Municipality of South Bruce                     542                                             3081 hours

“Longest Day of PLAY is really starting to catch on in Grey Bruce with the majority of municipalities and schools taking part.” said Jason Weppler, Health Promoter at the Grey Bruce Health Unit. “The numbers prove we have the capacity locally to reverse our increasing inactive rates.”

The 2014 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card identified that only seven percent of 5 - 11 year olds and four percent of 12 - 17 year olds are meeting the recommended physical activity guidelines of one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day.
