New Tanning Bed Legislation for Youth Now in Effect in Perth County

As of May 1, 2014, youth under the age of 18 are no longer allowed to use tanning beds in Ontario. The new legislation was introduced to protect young people - who are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation - from skin cancer.

The new law requires that tanning bed operators post signs in their business that warn about this restriction and of the dangers associated with tanning bed use. Operators will be required to ask for proof of age identification and will not be allowed to promote UV tanning services to youth under 18.

Health Units will be enforcing the law across the province. In Perth County, Public Health Inspectors from the Perth District Health Unit have been contacting local tanning bed operators to make sure they are aware of the legislation, provide them with the appropriate signage, and ensure that they are following the requirements of the law. Ongoing, inspections will be carried out on a complaint basis.

Skin Cancer

The World Health Organization (WHO) has placed tanning beds in its highest cancer risk category. The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer reported that the risk of skin cancer, in particular melanoma, increases by 75 percent when tanning beds are used prior to the age of 35. In Ontario, the incidence of melanoma has been rising in youth and young adults aged 15-34.

“Prohibiting young people from using tannings beds should ultimately lead to a decrease in the incidence of skin cancer in Ontario,” says Karen Bergin-Payette, Public Health Nurse.
