Female Volunteers Needed for Teen Esteem Program this Fall

Teen Esteem volunteers make it happen! For over 10 years, the Teen Esteem program has been making a positive difference in the lives of young women in Perth County. Will you join us?

The Perth District Health Unit is recruiting adult female volunteers for the fall sessions of the Teen Esteem program, which will be offered at the following schools:

  • Holy Name of Mary (St. Marys)
  • Milverton Public School
  • Elma Township Public School

“We hope that people who enjoy relating to youth will consider getting involved,” says Courtney MacIntosh, Public Health Nurse. “The feedback we receive from our volunteers is that their role is rewarding - a chance to encourage young women, share their life experiences and contribute to the community.”

The youth who participate also respond positively to the program. Maureen Moore, a Teen Esteem adult volunteer, says: “Each group of young women brings their energy and joy of life to each session. Not only do they take away relevant information, but they leave me feeling I've learned more about being a young person in Canada today.”

Teen Esteem is a six-week program that runs in Perth County schools as a one-hour workshop during lunchtime. Teen Esteem is based on a mentorship model. Volunteers facilitate activities with small groups of female students while also sharing their own life experiences and career choices. Volunteers receive orientation and training by a Public Health Nurse, who is also available at every session to offer guidance and support.

Teen Esteem has been offered for 11 years in Perth County. The program is operated by the Perth District Health Unit with financial support from Stratford’s Zonta Club and On Stage Dance Studio.

Women who are interested in volunteering are asked to call the Coordinator of Volunteer Services, Donna Bentz, at 519-271-7600 ext 305 or toll free at 1-877-271-7348 ext 305.
