Falls Prevention Celebrates 20 Years in Grey Bruce

The Grey Bruce Community Coalition for the Prevention of Falls in Older Adults is celebrating its 20th anniversary of working to prevent falls in Grey Bruce.

Current and past members of the Coalition will meet 12:00 noon, Friday, October 3 at Knox United Church, 236 Garafraxa Street North, Durham. A cake cutting will mark this milestone. The celebration will recognize important contributions made in the past and learn about current and future initiatives.

The Grey Bruce Community Coalition for the Prevention of Falls in Older Adults (CCPFOA) formed in 1994. The Coalition brings awareness of the significance of falls, fall risk factors and falls prevention strategies to older adults, caregivers and healthcare workers. Initiatives have included implementing a home exercise program, healthcare workshops and developing resources including a home safety checklist. Current programs include promoting the Finding Balance Ontario campaign and falls prevention month in November.

One in every three seniors over the age of 65 will fall each year. In Grey Bruce an estimated six seniors per day visit the emergency room because of a fall. These falls need not happen through recognizing the risks and taking steps to prevent falls.

For more information on preventing falls, visit www.findingbalanceontario.ca.

The Coalition works closely with the Grey Bruce Falls Prevention and Intervention Program. Members include older adults, representatives from First Nations and agencies that work closely with seniors.

Many organizations and community members have played an important role in the success and longevity of the group. Anyone who has been involved with the Coalition in the past and would like to attend the event, please call Amber Schieck at the Grey Bruce Health Unit, 519-376-9420 ext. 1270.
