Owen Sound Votes for Healthy Smiles

The Grey Bruce Health Unit celebrates Owen Sound residents’ choice to maintain fluoridation in the municipal water supply.

“The vote shows people have heard and understood the science rather than being swayed by the opinion of those who would cause needless worry.” says Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hazel Lynn. “The science is solid. Municipal water fluoridation benefits everyone, in particular the most vulnerable, including children and seniors who may not have the best dental care.”

Health in All Policies

The fluoride question on the ballot in Owen Sound was part of a wider Health in All Policies campaign that speaks to the health of a community. The campaign highlights important community health issues and the actions at the local level to improve those concerns. This approach asks decision makers to recognize the health consequences of the choices they make in the design and delivery of policies, programs and services. This strategy is part of the goal of creating a culture of health within Grey Bruce and includes support for the addition of fluoride in municipal water systems where naturally occurring levels are below optimal.

The local Health in All Policies initiative attracted the attention of the California Department of Public Health with a request to collaborate and to share resources. California’s Health in All Policies Task Force brings together 22 state departments to improve health while meeting the state’s sustainability goals.
