Dignity After Decades: St Joseph's Readies to Open Doors of New Facility

A new mental health care facility will open on November 16 when patients and staff make the short drive from the current facility, on Highbury Avenue, to the new Mental Health Care Building at what will be known as Parkwood Institute.

The facility, adjacent to the current Parkwood Hospital will have the capacity for 156 beds for the treatment, recovery and rehabilitation of adolescents and adults experiencing severe and persistent mental illness. Patients will progress in their rehabilitation journey with a team of expert care providers in this specially designed facility with light-filled rooms and corridors and private patient bedrooms and bathrooms. This facility will serve London, Elgin, Oxford, Middlesex, Lambton, Huron Perth and Grey Bruce for longer-term mental health care.

Receiving top honours in environmental design, St. Joseph’s Mental Health Care Building will achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED®) Gold certification for the design and construction of the new facility.

“These new spaces will provide a place for dignified care. Private patient bedrooms and bathrooms will give individuals autonomy and privacy,” says Sandy Whittall, VP Mental Health Services. “The new spaces will help to promote healing, education and skill building, as well as encourage social interaction and a sense of community. Our new facility will give staff greater pride and strengthen their commitment to patients and families in a welcoming environment.”

St. Joseph’s will be celebrating the grand opening with the Honourable Deb Matthews, Deputy Premier of Ontario, and MPP London North Centre.
