HealthKick
Previous HealthKick Participate Returns to Huron Country to Practice as Naturopathic Doctor!

HealthKick originally began as a pilot project in 2005 as a local health initiative to help address the shortage of healthcare human resources within the rural area of Huron County. One significant mandate of the program was to develop opportunities for local youth to learn about local healthcare opportunities in hopes for these youth not only to choose a career in healthcare, but also to return to the Huron County area to practice their chosen profession. Since it’s beginning, the program has proven to have numerous successes, winning several provincial awards, and continual funding based on its successes. HealtkKick takes pride in sharing it success stories with the community and following up with past program participants to find out how HealthKick impacted their career choice. Rosanna Grobbink, a native to the Seaforth/Walton Area and past HealthKick participant, has recently returned to the Huron County area to practice in Goderich as a Naturopathic Doctor at Good Earth Naturopathic Centre.

While completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph, Rosanna had the opportunity to be a participant in numerous programs offered by HealthKick.  During her time with HealthKick, she assisted Physician Recruitment leader Gwen Devereaux and HealthKick Program Manager, Laura Overholt, with daily operations of the HealthKick program including the planning and implementation of a MedQUEST camp for local high school students. After reflecting on her experiences, Rosanna knows her participation in the program played a significant role in her decision for her chosen healthcare career and her decision to return back to the county to practice as a Naturopathic Doctor. While participating with HealthKick she had multiple opportunities to learn about various healthcare professions, which allowed her to assess her own skill set and interests to determine, which career would be best suited for her. This included having the opportunity to shadow and network with various healthcare professionals.

After spending a year practicing as a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) in an urban centre Rosanna has decided to return to Huron County. As a ND, she is exited to return to the rural way of life and to act as a complement to current healthcare being offered in the area. Naturopathic Doctors have extensive training in primary healthcare and natural medicines and she is hoping to increase accessibility to primary healthcare services, which can be limited in rural underservices areas. ND’s are able to treat a variety of acute and chronic conditions using natural therapies that work to support the natural physiological processes in the body. Rosanna has had experience treating numerous conditions from colds and flus to women’s health to supporting patients while they receive conventional cancer treatment (chemotherapy and radiation). ND’s also place a significant focus on the prevention of diseases, and are helpful for prevention of many chronic conditions including diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease to name a few. Overall, Rosanna works very closely with each patient to set and achieve individual health goals using natural therapies, which can include acupuncture, nutritional changes, lifestyle changes, botanical medicine, nutrient supplementation and homeopathy. Rosanna is thankful for her experiences with HealthKick and is looking forward to giving back to a community that has already provided her with exceptional local youth opportunities in a rural area!
