Changes to Smoke Free Ontario Act coming in 2015

The Huron County Health Unit reminds residents of the changes to the Smoke Free Ontario Act coming in 2015.

Starting January 1, 2015, it will be illegal to:

  • Smoke on bar and restaurant patios
  • Smoke on and around children’s playgrounds and publicly owned sport fields and surfaces (such as areas for basketball, baseball, soccer or beach volleyball, ice rinks, tennis courts, splash pads and swimming pools)
  • Sell tobacco on university and college campuses.

“The Huron County Health Unit will be enforcing these changes,” says Patrick Landry, Public Health Inspector. “We will be available to answer any questions people may have about the new regulations as well as supporting the transition of these spaces to being smoke free.”

The Ontario government has made these changes in order to limit smoking in public places, to reduce second hand smoke exposure and to protect children and youth from the harmful effects of smoking.
