United Way Perth Huron Launches 2015 Newcomer Outreach and Needs Assessment (NONA) Project

The Multicultural Association of Perth Huron (MAPH), a project of United Way Perth-Huron, is pleased to announce the launch of the 2015 Newcomer Outreach and Needs Assessment (NONA) project.

With the help of an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, a Project Manager, Program Administrator, and a Community Liaison Facilitator have been hired part time for 2015 to implement the NONA project and coordinate the volunteers who devote their time to the Multicultural Association. The award will be presented on January 14th at 2:00 p.m. at MAPH, 32 Erie Street, Stratford by Randy Pettapiece, MPP for Perth Wellington with Rena Spevack, Chair of OTF’s Grey, Bruce, Huron, Perth Grant Review Team in attendance.

“I want to congratulate the Multicultural Association of Perth-Huron for this exciting initiative,” said MPP Pettapiece. “I also want to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for acknowledging and supporting their work. We should be proud to live in such a welcoming community.”

Over the next year, the NONA project will gather information about the needs of newcomers to Perth and Huron Counties. This will enable the MAPH to develop referral and social networking services to better serve these residents and assist them to integrate into local communities. In addition, guides for newcomers, employers, and service agencies will be developed.

The Multicultural Association of Perth Huron has been operating as a volunteer-based United Way project since 2013. Since that time its volunteers have seen 289 client intakes representing 580 individuals from over 54 countries.

“Newcomers to Huron and Perth Counties enrich our communities by teaching us about the world we live in and reminding us that even though we may be different, we are all the same,” said Dr. Gezahgn Wordofa, founder of the MAPH.

A leading grantmaker in Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the capacity of the voluntary sector through investments in community-based initiatives.
