Ontario Supports Aboriginal Community Consultation Capacity
Ontario is supporting projects that create jobs, foster industry partnerships and promote economic development opportunities in First Nations communities.
Through the New Relationship Fund (NRF), Ontario is supporting projects that will help build the capacity of First Nations, Métis communities and Aboriginal organizations to work with government and industry and participate in economic development activities.
NRF projects help Aboriginal communities hire staff, host industry meetings, draft strategic plans and develop consultation tools. This helps create more opportunities for jobs and build relationships among Aboriginal people, government and industry.
Improving socio-economic outcomes for Aboriginal people is part of the government's economic plan for Ontario. The four-part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people's talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives, and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire. Quick Facts:
- Ontario provided almost $1.5 million in support to 30 enhanced capacity-building projects through the NRF in 2014-15.
- Ontario is also providing almost $13 million in support to 103 core consultation-capacity projects in 2014-15.
- Since 2008, the NRF has invested more than $97 million to support over 650 projects led by Aboriginal communities and organizations.
