SMMH Auxiliary Donation Helps Purchase Much Needed New Equipment

Fundraising is a significant component of the St. Marys Memorial Hospital Auxiliary mandate allowing this caring and active group of volunteers to positively impact patient care at the St. Marys Memorial Hospital Site of the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA). With funds available in the 2014/15 fiscal year the Auxiliary made a generous donation of $13,074.25 that has helped purchase the following much needed pieces of patient care equipment:

  • A ceiling lift which enables patients to be transferred in a safe, comfortable and dignified way.
  • A sleeper chair which promotes a healing environment for patients by providing home-like comfort for their family members who may wish to spend the night.
  • An adult and pediatric pulse oximeter which is a non-invasive device used to measure a patient’s blood-oxygen saturation level and pulse rate.
  • A mini isolation cart used to store all the supplies required by protocol to reduce the risk of hospital acquired infections between patients, healthcare workers and visitors.

Money is raised primarily through the Auxiliary’s Gift Shop along with Bingos, Bake Sales and other fundraising activities.

“We are lucky to live in such a generous community,” said Auxiliary President Larry Beattie. “Through the dedication of our volunteers and community members who support our Gift Shop and fundraising initiatives, we are able to give back to our patients and families in a meaningful way.”

"The quality of care we are able to provide to our patients across the HPHA is very much strengthened by the commitment and dedication of our volunteers," said Andrew Williams, HPHA President and CEO. "The equipment we have been able to acquire in St. Marys is a tremendous example of this as it both improves patient care and provides a safer environment for our staff."

Those interested in becoming an auxiliary member are asked to contact Cheryl Hunt, Corporate Lead Volunteer Services at 519-272-8210 ext 2551 or via email cheryl.hunt@hpha.ca.
