HPHA Helps Save Lives Through Organ & Tissue Donation Registration

In support of BeADonor month this April, staff, physicians and volunteers at Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) are revitalizing their commitment to Trillium Gift of Life Network's (TGLN) organ and tissue donation workplace registration drive initiative.

The registration drive has one simple ask: register to be an organ and tissue donor.

Since October 2012 over 700 employees, as well as their family and friends, have visited HPHA’s dedicated campaign page to register their consent to organ and tissue donation or check their registration status.

Those who did not have a chance to register during the initial drive are being asked to pledge their support this month by registering. The revived drive is also a great opportunity for new employees and volunteers to learn more about organ and tissue donation and transplantation and register their consent or check their status.

Polls show more than 85% of Ontarians are in favour of organ donation. However, only one in four Ontarians have registered their consent to donate.

According to TGLN, HPHA communities rank above the national average in regards to donor registration but the reality is there is a chronic shortage of organs and tissue available for transplantation across Canada, and the need for organs and tissue in Ontario continues to outweigh their availability.

The workplace registration drive initiative was designed to address this disconnect between intention and action. Engaging with Ontarians where they work, gives them the opportunity and inspiration to follow through on their intent.

"As a co-chair of HPHA’s Organ and Tissue Donation committee, I am proud to say that the HPHA has become an important contributor to the Trillium Gift of Life network,” says Dr. Tyler Rouse. “Our staff have done an excellent job reporting potential donors and we consistently rank near the top of the list of participating institutions. We have been able to provide donations that have real impacts for recipients. I encourage everyone to visit www.beadonor.ca/hpha and take a few minutes to sign up!"
