Music Awakens Memories

Music can combat memory loss by touching the hearts and souls of patients. At the sold-out Geriatric Medicine Refresher Day conference on May 6, keynote speaker Dan Cohen will screen the poignant, award-winning 2014 Sundance Film Festival documentary Alive Inside. This documentary follows Cohen as he demonstrates music’s ability to restore a deep sense of self to those with memory loss.

Cohen is the founder of the non-profit group Music & Memory that helps elders in care facilities suffering from cognitive and physical challenges find renewed meaning and connection in their lives through personalized music. This music taps deep memories not lost to dementia, enabling residents to feel like themselves again: to converse, socialize and stay present. Visit the webpage to preview the documentary. On May 6 there will also be a free public showing of Alive Inside from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at the Wolf Performance Hall, Central Library.

Geriatrics deals with the unique needs of the frail elderly. “Geriatric Medicine Refresher Day is hailed as one of Ontario’s premiere geriatric conferences,” says conference chair Dr. Laura Diachun, a geriatrician at St. Joseph’s Parkwood Institute. “We have an outstanding lineup of presenters who will share the most up-to-date medical information and techniques, and bring new insight into optimizing care for seniors.”

The conference is hosted by St. Joseph’s Health Care London’s specialized geriatric services in collaboration with the division of geriatric medicine at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

Dan Cohen and Dr. Laura Diachun will be available to speak to media:
