City Celebrates Fifth Seniors’ Satellite

Members of the community, Deputy Mayor Maureen Cassidy, Councillor Jared Zaifman and City staff gathered today to officially open the Westminster Seniors’ Satellite with a ribbon cutting ceremony and community celebration.

Westminster Park Church, located at 1190 Southdale Road East, is the newest seniors’ satellite to open in London. Other locations include the East London Library, Boyle Community Centre, the Berkshire Club and Chalmers Presbyterian Church. Collectively, the satellites host over 400 members, and each week provide recreation and leisure programs that enhance the lives of older adults living in our community. The programs offered at the satellite locations mimic the ‘core’ programs available at the Kiwanis and Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centres.

“We are very appreciative of our partnership with Westminster Park Church for use of their facilities for this new community seniors’ satellite,” said Lynne Livingstone, Managing Director of Neighbourhood, Children and Fire Services. “Each satellite, although in different London communities, will always be welcoming, accessible, diverse, inclusive, and age friendly. With the creation of our satellites, older adults have an opportunity to meet new friends, participate in various recreation programs and volunteer, all within their immediate neighbourhood.”

“Recreational opportunities for older adults play a vital role in building strong neighbourhoods and healthy residents,” said Deputy Mayor Cassidy. “By working with communities to bring customized programming to satellite centres, we are responding to residents’ needs and making services easier for older adults to access.”

The annual membership fee to a Seniors’ Satellite Centre is $10.50 and programming is tailored to meet suggestions and requests of members.  Programs and activities at Westminster Seniors’ Satellite take place on Tuesdays from 1-4 p.m.
