Celebrating National Aboriginal Day

This Sunday signifies the first day of summer. But, it’s also a day for Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage and diverse cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Metis (FNIM) peoples. First celebrated in 1996, National Aboriginal Day gives people an opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal people and their contributions towards the country’s development and progress.

Based on lifestyle trends, cancer is expected to increase more for Aboriginal Ontarians than for the general population. In response to these statistics, Cancer Care Ontario has developed an Aboriginal Cancer Strategy, which sets out a clear plan for reducing risk and preventing cancer. The Strategy recognizes the challenges faced by Aboriginal Ontarians, and provides both the tools and the control to create change.

One of these tools is the appointment of an Aboriginal Patient Navigator. Chantel liaises with and advocates for the needs of First Nation, Inuit and Metis peoples and their families who live in the South West region of Ontario. “I don’t know what I would have done without Chantel’s help,” says Katrina, who cared for her mother through a terminal cancer diagnosis. “Chantel accompanied us to all of the doctor’s appointments and supported us in making difficult decisions.”

Chantel’s role involves facilitating and coordinating access to cancer services for palliative and supportive care, addressing cultural and spiritual needs, and networking with FNIM and non-Aboriginal partners to make the cancer journey a culturally safe experience.
