United Way Perth-Huron
Settlement Counsellor to provide settlement assistance Huron and Perth locations

United Way Perth-Huron, Multicultural Association Perth-Huron and The Centre for Employment and Learning are pleased to announce that a settlement counsellor will be available once a month in both Huron and Perth Counties.  The counsellor will be available at the Multicultural Association in Stratford and at the Centre for Employment and Learning in Exeter, to assist with Government forms and to respond to immigration questions.

“This will be such a tremendous resource for newcomers to both counties”, stated Mark Hertzberger, Project Manager at the Multicultural Association of Perth-Huron.  “Processes and forms can be confusing at best, but in a second language it is especially helpful to have some knowledgeable guidance.”  Those assisted will also have access to an intake worker at the Multicultural Association to help them with their other needs.

“Every country does things differently, so it is a wonderful opportunity to have both a counsellor and the association available to help those new to our communities.”

A group of organizations that were  already providing some settlement assistance with English as a second language classes, referrals and employment counselling, came together to provide an interim solution to a service gap that existed in both Perth and Huron Counties.  The steering committee consisted of Huron Local Immigration Partnership, Conestoga Career Centre, Partners in Employment, Multicultural Association of Perth-Huron and the Centre for Employment and Learning.  The committee flagged the need of not only newcomers but individuals that may already have been residing in the area for many years.  Thanks to the United Way providing a demonstration and development grant a settlement counsellor is now available.

For an appointment in Exeter contact the Centre for Employment & Learning at 519-235-0471 and in Stratford contact Multicultural Association of Perth Huron at the United Centre at 519-271-7730.
