City of London
City to recognize Queen Elizabeth II reign milestone
The City of London will officially recognize and commemorate Queen Elizabeth II as Canada’s longest reigning monarch on September 9 in a brief ceremony before the Civic Works Committee and City Council on September 15 starting at 4 pm.
On September 9, throughout the United Kingdom and all Commonwealth countries, similar ceremonies will honour Her Majesty the Queen, as she marks over 63 years on the throne. As of that date, Her Majesty’s reign will have surpassed that of the previous longest reigning monarch, Queen Victoria. Only five other kings and queens in British history have reigned for 50 years or more:
- Victoria (63 years)
- George III (59 years)
- Henry III (56 years)
- Edward III (50 years)
- James VI of Scotland (James I of England) (58 years)
The City of London invites everyone to stop by and sign a commemorative book of well wishes, which will be located in the Lobby of City Hall until September 30. The City will also be planting an oak tree next to the King George VI oak tree in Victoria Park, and submitting a letter from the Mayor to the Queen recognizing Her Majesty’s accomplishment.
Performances by:
- Denise Pelley at Civic Works Committee on September 9
- Amabile Choir at City Council on September 15
