Farm Fresh Box Open House and Funding Announcement

The Local Community Food Centre will be hosting an Open House on Wednesday, September 9, from 3pm to 6pm.
The purpose of this event is to announce the launch of the “Farm Fresh Box” program. We will also take the opportunity to unveil a new prep kitchen that has been constructed in the Local’s Storehouse, and our newly acquired refrigerated truck.

At 3pm representatives from the various funders and donors who have supported the construction of the kitchen, the acquisition of the truck, and the establishment of the Farm Fresh Box program will receive public recognition and thanks for their invaluable contributions to these new features at the Local. This includes: the Stratford Perth Community Foundation; Farm Credit Canada; the George Lunan Foundation; Ontario Student Nutrition Program; the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; and the United Way of Perth-Huron. Representatives from these funders will be on hand to say a few words, including MPP Randy Pettapiece representing the Province of Ontario, Ryan Erb from the United Way of Perth-Huron, and Tracy Van Kalsbeek from the Stratford Perth Community Foundation.

The Farm Fresh Box is a new program being launched by the Local with funding support from OMAFRA’s Local Food Fund. It will give Stratford community members the opportunity to have a box full of farm-fresh, healthy, all-local produce delivered to their door for $25. The goal is to provide community members with an efficient and cost-effective channel for accessing the incredible local food our region is famous for while also increasing opportunities for local producers to connect with Stratford residents.

In addition, this program will also support enhanced access to quality local food for those who are vulnerable to food insecurity. This includes free monthly boxes to those who are actively enrolled in the Local’s food skills, gardening and social justice programs. It also includes the opportunity for those who volunteer to help pack and deliver the boxes each week to receive a free monthly box.

For the Open House there will be sample boxes on hand for people to view, information on how to order, coordinators on hand to discuss the program, as well as light farm-fresh refreshments!
