Making Healthy Communities the Election Issue

The Grey Bruce Health Unit is asking all federal candidates to include consideration for what makes a healthy community part of their 2015 election platform.

“We want candidates to know that decisions made by elected officials can greatly affect the health of their residents and community.” said Dr. Hazel Lynn, Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health. “We are asking candidates to support health by incorporating healthy community principles into their election campaign.”

All federal candidates across Grey Bruce will receive a Health in All Policies resource package. The material looks at important community health issues in six priority areas and the actions, at the federal level, to improve these concerns.

Income and Employment SecurityHealthy Food Systems
Environment and Climate ChangeHealthy Transportation Networks
Healthy HousingAccess to Recreation

The Health in All Policies approach asks decision-makers to recognize the health consequences in the choices they make. This strategy is part of the goal of creating a culture of health within Grey Bruce. The role of a candidate in creating or championing health in their community cannot be overstated.
