Fusion Youth Centre Awarded $5,000 Loblaw Healthy Kids Grant
The Fusion Youth Activity and Technology Centre is proud to announce they have been selected as the recipient of a 2015/16 Loblaw Healthy Kids Grant in the amount of $5,000. The funding will go towards Fusion’s Healthy Food Program which encourages a healthy lifestyle for youth with a focus on creating long lasting habits and attitudes towards healthy eating, and also, on enhancing their current Nutrition programs. Through these programs, Fusion will create innovative approaches to youth culinary programming, encourage youth to connect to their community and provide inclusive opportunities for all ages, demographics and abilities.
In late 2014, Fusion completed renovations on a new commercial kitchen which has helped to elevate their culinary programs and increase youth participation in fun, hands-on, healthy eating activities that have a skills focus. “Tremblett’s Independent Grocer recognizes the importance of healthy eating programs such as the ones offered at Fusion Youth Centre so supporting their application made perfect sense” said Rob Tremblett, owner of Tremblett’s Independent. “We appreciate that local youth have access to facilities, programs and equipment that build self-confidence, knowledge and skill development.”
Fusion Youth Centre has been fortunate enough to receive funding from Loblaw Companies annually since 2010 to support existing programs such as their “Go Chicks", Recreation & Fitness, Nutrition and the Culinary Arts programs. With the most recent grant, Fusion will use the funding from Treblett’s Independent in partnership with Loblaw’s to provide an opportunity for youth to learn the fundamentals of budgeting, preparing, cooking and cleaning. The culinary program will educate the youth on the importance of buying local, and more specifically, how and where to buy local produce. Youth will become more aware of the importance of food traceability, and benefits of buying local and supporting their community.
