Inquest Date into the Deaths of Seven First Nations Youth Announced
Dr. Dirk Huyer, Chief Coroner for Ontario, today announced that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the deaths of:
- Jethro Anderson, 15
- Curran Strang, 18
- Paul Panacheese, 21
- Robyn Harper, 19
- Kyle Morrisseau, 17
- Jordan Wabasse, 15
- Reggie Bushie, 15
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these youths who died after leaving their remote home communities to pursue secondary school in Thunder Bay. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths in the future.
The inquest is expected to hear from approximately 200 witnesses between October 2015 and March 2016.
The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, 2015, at a location yet to be determined in Thunder Bay. Dr. David Eden will preside as inquest coroner and Trevor Jukes, Karen Shea and Amy Leamen will be counsel to the coroner.
The inquest will be streamed live on the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services website.
