Perth District Health Unit
City of Stratford and Health Unit Face Off in Pedometer Challenge!
Perth County ? More than 125 City of Stratford and Perth District Health Unit employees are “walking the talk” as they compete in a month-long pedometer challenge that’s encouraging staff to be more active.
The PDHU vs City Challenge is an employee-driven competition that runs from September 14 to October 9. Each organization has a team of about 60 people. Team members are working together to rack up their step counts and track their physical activities - all for the grand prize trophy, and of course, bragging rights.
Everyone from office-based workers, support staff, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Miriam Klassen, and Mayor Dan Mathieson, has joined the challenge.
“We were excited to challenge the Perth District Health Unit this year, and so far, the response of our staff has been extremely positive,” says Mayor Mathieson. “It is already bringing people together for a common goal – to lead healthy, active lifestyles.”
Wearing a pedometer can help you assess your activity level and motivate you to move more. “By participating in this challenge, employees are looking for new ways to take more steps and build physical activity into their day in a lasting way,” says Dr. Klassen. “Research shows that physically active employees are healthier, more productive and experience less stress, illness and injuries.”
The current recommendation is to aim for approximately 10,000 steps per day to ensure you meet the physical activity guidelines.
The City of Stratford has participated in pedometer competitions in the past. So far, the City has maintained bragging rights, as they’ve won the competition since its inception. This year, the winning team will be awarded a grand prize trophy. A participation award will also be given to the organization with the highest percent of staff participation.
