City celebrates sixth seniors’ satellite location

Members of the community, Mayor Brown, Councillor Salih and City staff gathered to officially open the sixth Seniors’ Satellite Centre at the Beacock Public Library with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a community celebration.

Beacock Public Library, located at 1280 Huron Street, is the newest seniors’ satellite to open in London. Other locations include the East London Library, Boyle Community Centre, the Berkshire Club, Chalmers Presbyterian Church and Westminster Park Church. Collectively, the satellites host over 400 members, and each week provide recreation and leisure programs that enhance the lives of older adults living in our community.

“This is a great addition to the neighbourhood and to our community. Now seniors who live in the area can enjoy affordable programming and have more opportunities to stay active and engaged,” said Mayor Matt Brown. “Council’s four-year Strategic Plan calls for us to strengthen our community by building vibrant, connected and engaged neighbourhoods and make London a healthy, safe and accessible city. Centres like this one help us do exactly that.”

“We have always recognized the importance of reaching out to older adults in London, and with the creation of our satellite locations we are offering new opportunities for people to meet new friends, participate in a variety of programs, and volunteer,” said Lynne Livingstone, Managing Director of Neighbourhood, Children and Fire Services. “Each satellite, although in different London communities, will always be welcoming, accessible, diverse, inclusive and age-friendly.”

The annual membership fee to a Seniors’ Satellite is $10.50 and programming is tailored to meet suggestions and requests of members.  Programs and activities at the Beacock Seniors’ Satellite take place on Fridays from 1-4 p.m.
