National Infection Control Week

National Infection Control Week October 19 – 25, 2015

We all practice infection prevention every day. Every time you wash your hands, every time you get a vaccination, every time you use a hand sanitizer going in and out of a hospital; these are examples of how we all prevent the spread of disease. National Infection Control Week October 19 – 25, reminds us of the importance of preventing the spread of disease, both in our own lives and in health care settings.

This year’s campaign “Think Global, Act Local” speaks to the fact that we live in a global community. Increased world-wide travel and changing global weather patterns result in emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases being a potential risk almost anywhere in the world.

There are many simple things you can do to take health into your own hands and to protect yourself and others from the spread of infection:

  • Wash your hands - Often!
  • Get you flu shot every year and  make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date
  • Cover your cough
  • Stay home when you are ill
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
  • Travel awareness (be aware of travel notices, required immunizations, etc.)
  • Infection prevention is simple and is most effective when everyone makes the effort.
