National Waste Reducation Week October 19-25

National Waste Reduction Week kicks-off Monday, October 19, and the City of London encourages Londoners to reduce, reuse and recycle this week and every day of the year.

“Building a London that is sustainable for future generations is fundamental to Council’s four-year Strategic Plan,” said Mayor Matt Brown. “Supporting Waste Reduction Week and helping Londoners know how to properly recycle is one more step we are taking to help make London a healthier and greener place to live, work, learn and play.”

Mayor Brown highlights that Londoners should be proud of their waste reduction results to date. Londoners currently divert 45 per cent of their waste, by weight, from landfill and that creates jobs, is good for the environment, reduces greenhouse gas generation and conserves space in our landfill.

Waste Reduction Week in Canada aims to inform and educate Canadians about the environmental and social impacts of wasteful practices. To help raise awareness about the week, the City of London is launching 3 initiatives:

  • A promotion focused on cartons & cups recycling to highlight these items are recyclable and belong in the ‘containers’ Blue Box or Blue Cart – not the ‘paper’ bin.
  • To emphasize our ongoing Sort it Right campaign we are running a contest between October 19 and 26. Inspections will occur of randomly selected Blue Boxes and Blue Carts. Those that have correctly sorted cartons & cups and other recyclables will win a $50 Gift Card donated by Tim Hortons.  All prize winners will be eligible to win the grand prize of a $1,500 grocery store gift card donated by the Carton Council of Canada.
  • To celebrate 25 years of recycling, we are seeking Londoners who are still using the original Blue Box that was first placed at the curb in 1990. Participation is easy: Londoners can send us their photo holding the classic Blue Box and a short paragraph telling us why they recycle. Full details are available at london.ca/recycle.

“Waste Reduction Week is the perfect time to highlight the great things Londoners are already doing to reduce the amount of garbage being produced,” said Jay Stanford, Director, Environment, Fleet & Solid Waste. “We get a chance to thank Londoners who are doing a great job and to share more information with those that know they can do a better job.”

Our Waste Reduction Week Calendar available at London.ca provides full details of programs going on during Waste Reduction Week.
