November is Falls Prevention Month!
Mini Expos at Flu Shot Clinics will Promote Healthy Aging
Perth County ? November is Falls Prevention Month and the Perth District Health Unit is partnering with local organizations to promote healthy aging and independent living among older adults. “Falls are preventable and we all have a role to play in reducing the risks,” says Chera Longston, Public Health Promoter.
Healthy Aging Mini Expos at Select Flu Shot Clinics
For a third year in a row, the Health Unit and local partners will host healthy aging mini expos at select flu shot clinics across Perth County. The events will focus on risk factors associated with falls, how to prevent falls from happening, what to do if a fall occurs, and how to help someone who has fallen. Exhibitors will include community support services, local pharmacies, and not-for-profit groups.
Dates and times include (drop-in anytime):
- Tue October 27 (2-4pm), Stratford Rotary Complex, 353 McCarthy Rd
- Wed October 28 (4-530pm), Perth East Recreation Centre, 40 Temperance St, Milverton
- Thu October 29 (3-5pm), Mitchell Community Centre, 185 Wellington St

Preventing Falls in Older Adults
Falls are the leading cause of serious injuries in older adults and every year, one in three older adults will fall. “Falls significantly impact the lifestyle and activities of older adults,” says Longston. “It’s important that we understand the many factors that contribute to falls and focus our efforts on prevention.”
