City of London
Syrian Refugee Crisis Community Effort Update
London’s interfaith community is continuing its efforts to bring Syrian refugee families to London more than a month after the initial launch. To date, more than $200,000 has been collected through all fundraising efforts.
Thanks to the generosity of Londoners there are six applications underway to sponsor families into our community.
The London Islamic has been actively raising funds to support the community-wide efforts. In addition, schools from across the London District Catholic School Board also raised close to $20,000.
Tomorrow, members of Oakridge Presbyterian Church will camp out in the parking lot to fundraise and honour the plight of refugees. Recently settled families from Syria will share their first-hand account of their experiences. On November 14, the London Multicultural Community Association will host a celebration gala with proceeds supporting the resettlement efforts.
Donations are welcomed at St. Aidan’s Anglican Church, the Islamic Centre, London Muslim Mosque, Oakridge Presbyterian and many other religious organizations across the city.
“Thank you to London’s interfaith community and to the community-at-large for this compassionate and caring response,” said Mayor Matt Brown. “As we continue to work together to make London more open for all, I would encourage Londoners to continue to give and support this community-wide effort.”
Mayor Brown has also been working with civic leaders from across the country as a member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Task Force on Refugee Resettlement.
