Mayor to attend Governor General's forum on welcoming Syrian refugees

Mayor Matt Brown will join more than 100 colleagues tomorrow in Ottawa at a forum hosted by Governor General David Johnston about welcoming Syrian refugees to Canada.

The forum will highlight Canada’s diversity, inclusion and volunteerism efforts to prepare for the arrival of the refugees.

“Welcoming refugees isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart and caring thing to do, as generations of Canadians have done before us,” the Governor General said. “I look forward to bringing together leaders from the public and private sectors, as well as representatives of civil society to work collaboratively and to strengthen our national response to the Syrian crisis.”

“I am pleased to see the Governor General bring people together to address the challenges we will all face as we welcome the refugees into our communities,” Mayor Brown said. “It’s vital that we have coordinated responses and practices to best help all of those involved.”

The Governor General will deliver the opening speech which will then be followed by panel discussions about the settlement and integration process of Syrian refugees to their new home country. Topics include how best to mobilize the coordinated and collaborative action of governments, private sector businesses, communities and individuals in support of welcoming refugees to Canada; the importance of continued collaboration and the sharing of best practices, experiences and approaches.
