City of London
Neighbourhood Celebration
“Where you live is as important as whom you live with.” In 2008, this line attracted over 100 Londoners to participate in a resident taskforce focused on strengthening all of London’s neighbourhoods.
This evening, local residents, neighbourhood champions, community organizations, Mayor Matt Brown, Councillors, and City staff will gather once again at a large community event to celebrate the last five years of the London Strengthening Neighbourhoods Strategy (LSNS). The Carousel Room at the Western Fair District will be a hub of activity in a street-style neighbourhood-themed event to honour the many accomplishments of the five year implementation plan, promote new neighbourhood tools and resources and begin seeking input to form the next LSNS engagement strategy.
"This strategy was ground breaking - it changed the way we think about our city because now we see it as a city of neighbourhoods. The task force didn't just develop plans for one neighbourhood, we focused on all of them, because a rising tide raises all boats,” says Mayor Matt Brown. "Both Andrea and I were participants, we had just started our family and wanted to get more involved in our community - in fact our second son arrived part way through the year long process. Looking back, I realize that it was during the time I was involved in this volunteer work that I became interested in running for council." Londoners can learn more about the newly developed tools and resources below to help make their neighbourhoods great places by visiting london.ca/neighbourhoods. Neighbourhood Association Guide – tips, tools and templates to help residents build, maintain and sustain an effective neighbourhood association. NeighbourGood London – a website where interested residents can find all the neighbourhood strengthening tools and programs the City has to offer. Visit www.neighbourgoodlondon.ca. Neighbourhood Safety Audit – a staff-supported process to assess the safety in your neighbourhood and develop a resident-led action plan to create a safer neighbourhood for all. Outdoor Movie Kit – provides neighbourhood groups the necessary equipment to host a movie night in a City Park. Active and Green Communities – a new project that helps address Londoner’s concerns about our environment, health, household finances, and community wellbeing to build a more sustainable and resilient London. “We hope all residents who played a part in developing and realizing the London Strengthening Neighbourhoods Strategy will help to celebrate these 5 years of accomplishments because as we said from the outset, “residents are the heart of change in our neighbourhoods,” notes Lynne Livingstone, Managing Director of Neighbourhood, Children and Fire Services.
