Ontario Government reaffirms support for London rapid transit
Mayor Matt Brown today welcomed the news that the Ontario Government has reaffirmed its support in principle for London’s rapid transit initiative.
In its 2016 budget tabled earlier today, the government noted that the City’s rapid transit plan remains a significant provincial infrastructure project, and committed to cost-sharing the capital costs of the project.
Shift, the City’s rapid transit initiative, is currently undergoing an environmental assessment to determine routes and transit modes.
“I see this as very positive. I am pleased the Ontario Government continues to see our rapid transit initiative as a provincial project worthy of support,” the Mayor said. “Ongoing discussions with our partners at both the provincial and federal levels have been extremely productive, and our continued cooperation will ensure a truly transformative result for London and Southwestern Ontario.”
The planned 22-km transit system will connect many of London’s key institutions and integrate with other transportation modes including rail, air, and active transportation networks. Rapid transit is built into the City’s long-term plans including the draft London Plan, Transportation Master Plan and the Downtown London Plan.
