March is Nutrition Month

March is Nutrition Month. Food is our fuel, a tool for social connection and a powerful symbol. There is no more potent image for a fundraiser than that of a starving child. What would a family gathering or event be without tasty treats and snacks?

These days, there is a more heightened consciousness about food and ‘food fit’, depending on age and a host of genetic factors, than was the case a generation ago. However, even though there is a lot of material to assist individuals as they tackle the challenge of the ‘right diet’ for them, there is much confusion about the whats, whens, and hows. In Canada http://www.dietitians.ca/ is always an interesting and helpful site.

Take some time to review the other links attached in this e-letter – as they tackle the issue at hand from some different angles and vantage points. These links pose some questions about how groups and individuals can work together to tackle the societal problems (and great challenge for our health care systems) posed by food related concerns. For example, diabetes rates are escalating in many places in the world. This includes the area embraced by the SWLHIN (our area), developing nations and the south side of Chicago. This website provides another example, amplified by a doctor’s prescription pad, demonstrating how the power of partnerships can effect positive change among a targeted group. Locally, MSC’s Home Support team has been providing Meals on Wheels since 1981 and other nutrition supports (cooking, buying groceries for seniors & more) since 1978. They have seen first hand the powerful connections that food forges.
