Grey Bruce Health Unit
Nominate a Smoke-Free Champion!
Nominations are now open for the Grey Bruce Smoke-Free Champion Awards. The Grey Bruce Health Unit is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Smoke-Free Ontario by recognizing individuals and groups who have made a significant contribution to making Grey Bruce smoke-free.
While local smoke-free initiatives first rolled out in Grey Bruce in 2002, the Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy was launched province-wide in 2006 to reduce tobacco use and protect everyone from the harmful effects of tobacco. The Strategy supports more people to quit smoking , helps prevent young people from starting to smoke and protects everyone from second-hand smoke.
"We have seen significant changes, thanks in large part to the work of local champions," says Dr. Hazel Lynn, Medical Officer of Health, "From bans on smoking in workplaces, in cars with children, to hospital grounds and sports fields; changes like these only happen when local champions push to make our communities healthier."
The Health Unit will present Grey Bruce Smoke-Free Champion Awards on May 31, World No Tobacco Day, to recognize local individuals, groups, associations, schools, municipalities and organizations who have made significant contributions to smoking cessation, prevention and protection in Grey Bruce. Make your nominations by 4:30pm on May 2, through our website www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca or by calling 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456 ext 1212.
