Public Health Looking for Former Smokers to Share Their Quit Story
Elgin St Thomas Public Health is developing a new local campaign aimed to motivate current smokers to quit smoking with the inspiration from a former smoker’s success story. The new campaign is similar to what Algoma Public Health has done with showcasing former smoker quit stories on their website. It’s called “I quit smoking. Wanna know how?”
“We are looking for smokers who have made a quit attempt in the past year or so and have remained smoke-free,” says Health Promoter Jessica Lang. People are inspired through the actions of others. Therefore, after hearing about someone else who quit, why they quit, and how they quit, that story just may inspire someone else to quit as well.
With consent provided, Elgin St Thomas Public Health plans to share local success stories on their new website to be launched later this month. “Ideally we will have a photo or a short video taken with the former smoker and post it to our new website.” Sharing success stories on our Facebook and Twitter pages are also in the plan.
There are three different prizes to be awarded to those who have quit for one month, six months, and one year. Participants will be asked to submit the name of a witness who can confirm they have been smoke-free for the given period of time. “We understand that quitting smoking is a process and we want to acknowledge those who have quit for different lengths of time,” adds Lang. All names will be entered into a draw to win a gift certificate to a local St. Thomas or Elgin County restaurant.
Former smokers who are interested are asked to share their story by emailing stopsmoking@elginhealth.on.ca no later than Friday May 20th 2016.
