London Fire Department
2016 Smoke Alarm Program: "Working Together for a Safer Community"

This Friday, the London Fire Department will kick-off its renewed effort to ensure that all Londoners are properly protected by working smoke alarms. Starting Monday, May 2, fire crews will begin canvassing neighbourhoods in order to determine if every home has working smoke alarms on every storey and near all sleeping areas. They will provide complimentary smoke alarms and batteries where they find occupants are not adequately protected against fire.

"The more we can educate people around smoke alarms and grease fires, the more we can prevent unfortunate tragedies from happening to our families, friends and neighbours," said Mayor Matt Brown. "Keeping Londoners safe in their homes is our priority."

New this year, in partnership with the City's Wastewater Treatment Operations Division, fire crews will be distributing Your Turn biodegradable grease cups in a coordinated effort to reduce grease fires and buildup of fats, oils and grease (FOGs) in London's sewer system. "This is a great example of City divisions working together to make London neighbourhoods safer," said Deputy Fire Chief Brian McLaughlin.

"Putting food scraps, oils and grease into sinks and toilets is bad for our sewer system and the Thames River, and costly for the City to remove. Everybody knows the value of clean water, and making small adjustments to daily habits will have a significant impact on London's environment," said John Lucas, Director of Drinking Water and Reclaimed Water, City of London.
