GBHS Announces Construction Date for Expansion of Southampton Hospital
Today, Grey Bruce Health Services (GBHS) held a groundbreaking ceremony to announce May 16 as the start date for the expansion of the Southampton Hospital.
This project will include a 10,000 square-foot addition to the Emergency Department and a major renovation of the Laboratory. The new ER and Ambulatory Care area will include 11 modern treatment rooms, and the lab will double in size to process the high volume of tests from outpatients and inpatients. The Hospital and all services will remain open during the project.
"Our hospital has not been renovated for over 40 years, and we are very excited to be just days away from starting this long awaited expansion," said Lance Thurston, President and CEO of GBHS. "The expansion will allow us to better meet the needs of our current patient volumes, and will give us room to accommodate future growth in the area served by our Southampton Hospital."
The project will cost approximately $10 million, and is expected to take two years to complete. As with all hospital expansion projects in Ontario, the provincial government is contributing 90 per cent of the funding and the remaining 10 per cent is provided by the community.
"Today marks an incredible milestone for the future of health care in our community," said Tony Sheard, Chair of the Southampton Hospital Campaign. "We extend a heartfelt thank you to the many donors who have contributed to this project, including our largest donor, Bruce Power, who gave $500,000 for this expansion, and $500,000 for the renovation of the new Cancer Centre at the Owen Sound Regional Hospital."
The Emergency Department addition will be completed first along with the new front entrance. During this phase, the front entrance to the hospital will be closed and visitors and staff will enter from the back of the hospital. The Lab will be renovated during phase two of the project.
