New Community Access Market at the Local Community Food Centre
This Friday, May 20th, the Local Community Food Centre will begin hosting a new weekly “Community Access Market”.
For many of the community members who participate in the meals and programs at the Local Community Food Centre, fresh fruits and vegetables and unprocessed meats are out of reach due to the dual problem of high prices and lack of adequate income. The Community Access Market will be offering these kinds of healthy local food options at wholesale/at-cost prices to break down financial barriers.
Participation at the Community Access Market is for “Members Only”. Currently, memberships have been distributed for free to all participants in the Local’s meals and programs (including cooking classes, gardening programs, and the EPIC social justice club). These participants have also been given a “Guest Membership” to give to another community member they feel could benefit from shopping at the Community Access Market.
In contrast to a food bank, the Community Access Market model gives low income and food insecure community members the opportunity to shop and pay for fresh, healthy local food without the barriers of high prices. Patrons will be able to choose from all sorts of products including asparagus, chicken, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, rhubarb, pork and apples in a farmers-market-style environment. These locally produced food options have all been sourced through local wholesale channels such as produce auctions and meat processors and are being offered “at cost” with no profits for the Local.
