Getting Active Never Looked So Affordable

A free print guide featuring 170 free and low cost activities has been created by Active Elgin and the Healthy Kids Community Challenge. This guide will allow people to get involved in breaking a sweat without breaking the bank. The guide is available online at www.activeelgin.ca or paper copies are available at the following locations: Ontario Early Years Centre, YWCA, YMCA, Railway City Tourism, Elgin County Tourism, all Elgin County library branches, Ontario Works, Employment Services Elgin and the Northside Neighbourhood Hub.

"It wasn't all that long ago that Elgin St Thomas didn't have one central location to find sport, recreation or leisure programs easily. As a result of this, in 2009, money was received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in order to create www.activeelgin.ca. Since then, Active Elgin has successfully been labelled the 'go to' place for sport, recreation and leisure information," said Jessica Lang, Health Promoter at Elgin St Thomas Public Health.

Active Elgin wouldn't be possible without the support of over 250 community organizations that contribute their information.

St Thomas Public Library is dedicated to ensuring that it provides inclusive, accessible programming and services, the majority of which are free of charge", said Heather Robinson, public services librarian.

"The library's mission after all is 'to inform, educate and enrich' our community and we do so in a myriad of ways," said Robinson. "We offer programs that stimulate both mind and body for people of all ages including 'Books and Bounces' for babies'; Summer Reading Club for school-aged children; Teen Advisory Board for youth; and book clubs and learning series for adults. All of these programs are included in the guide, along with much more!"

Information on active transportation, including walking, hiking, biking, running, and rolling, can be accessed on the webpage. Active Elgin is designed to get the public up and moving "your way, today", with opportunities that get everyone involved. Visit www.activeelgin.ca today.
